MESSY ZONE
Why is Messy Play Important?
Two words: skills & expression
Children learn best through experience. (And really, don’t we all?) Through artistic and messy play children develop fine motor skills (squeezing, holding, brushing, pincer grips, etc), grasp deep scientific concepts (balance, weight, texture, consistency, etc) and satisfy their insatiable curiosity through sensory exploration. This is one arena children naturally develop skills.
Further, messy play and art exploration are the most fertile ground for open-ended creativity to flourish. A deep joy of and enthusiasm for creative work is something that is innate in every child, but too often get’s unlearned throughout years of following directions and living up to others predetermined ideas. Getting messy is critical for creative expression to occur.
